Today, Lenovo is branded as the leading PC company around the Globe. Along with this is its continuous experimentation on several other fields such as servers, storage solutions, smart TVs, IT software, tablets, apps, and mobile phones – thus, pursuing its goal to becoming one of the leading technology companies in the world.
Founded in 1984, the Chinese multinational company started with a capital of 200,000 yuan and the company name “Legend.” It was said that before its rise and expansion in Hong Kong, the company indeed went through trial and errors before achieving success in the field of PC making.
Being a company that both designs and creates its products, notably personal computers, workstations, servers, tablets, smartphones, software, and smart TVs, Lenovo has made a name of its own and became the world’s largest PC vendor. More so, it was able to acquire significant brands such as that of IBM and Motorola Mobility.
Lenovo’s acquisition of IBM and its Intel-based server business in the year 2005 and 2014 respectively have moved the brand to another level in the technology industry. Not only did it acquire one of the most significant brands in the computer history, but also the technology that goes along with it. This then helped Lenovo move further into innovation and set the standard when it comes to high-technology personal computers and other products.
Not long after in 2014, Lenovo also acquired the legendary Motorola Mobility from Google. This acquisition did not simply mean the iconic brand becoming a part of the Lenovo company. It also allowed significant access on the innovative product portfolio of Motorola along with its talented team from around the world.
Truly, there’s a lot more to look forward to about Lenovo. Its continuous efforts on innovation and technology are making it big out there, especially when it comes to making smartphones.
Meanwhile, UnlockBase is also updating the Lenovo Calculator for their supported smartphone models. These include the following:

Alcatel has moved their own standard when it comes to quality smartphones. With its aim to impress the market with its up-to-date technologies, this newly launched smartphone phablet is continuing the brand’s legacy when it comes to quality and affordable devices.
Display and Design

The bottom part, on the other hand, looks seamless given that Alcatel has integrated the in-cell navigation buttons into the display. The phone also instills the usual volume rocker and power button setup on the right side. Flipping the phone, it has a surprising circular shaped fingerprint sensor with metal outline comes along with the LED flash and rear camera. Plus, of course, the Alcatel logo not far below.
Moving forward to its display, much can be said that A30 Fierce is not your typical phablet. Along with a good 5.5-inch 720p display, it also includes a 2.5D Dragontrail Glass screen panel that is capable of 16M colors at 267ppi pixel density, great for HD viewing.

Power and Battery
The A30 Fierce aims to cater to the need of consumers of a long lasting battery life, thus, the 3000mAh capacity of the unit’s non-removable battery. It is a particularly smart move given that the unit is also equipped with a Mediatek MT6738 processor along with a quad-core Cortex-A53 clocked at 1.5GHz. Thus, enabling a smooth turn-around of several tasks.
Memory and Software
With great battery life and processor, what more can Alcatel offer on its A30 Fierce? The answer is a good 2GB of RAM along with a 32GB built-in storage and a Micro SD slot in the event that the user wishes to extend the unit’s storage capacity.
Additionally, the Alcatel A30 Fierce thankfully runs in Android 7.0 Nougat and can still be upgraded to a newer version of the Android operating system.

Kyocera has been known to produce waterproof smartphones; great waterproof smartphones at that. Today, it did not only produce one waterproof smartphone, but one that every user will find very different from its Hydro series. It has moved the bar with its new and improved features, living up to its name Kyocera Hydro Elite.
Design
The Kyocera Hydro Elite comes in a simple, (though a bit bulk) black-colored plastic over-all design measuring up to 4.82 by 2.38 by 0.43 inches and weighing up to 4.52 ounces. However, unlike its predecessors, the Elite is more minimalistic and modern. More so, the edges were much more premium and sleek this time. The rear part also comes off as rubberized, thus, it is easier to hold the device.
The placement up front is pretty common, apart from the non-inclusion of the in-ear speaker. The selfie-camera is located beside the sensor for notifications at the upper half, and then the brand’s logo at the bottom. Going to the sides, the power button along with the 3.5mm audio jack is placed at the top, the volume rocker at the left, and the Micro USB port on the right. This makes it easier for the user to reach the necessary buttons whenever needed.
Similar to common placements, the rear camera is located at the back of the unit. It also has the speaker and the LED flash at the sides, creating a minimal yet not too distracting setup at the rear’s polished top half. However, the bottom half of the unit was differently designed given that it has a matte, dimpled texture that helps prevent the handset from slipping from the user’s grip. It makes sense as the bottom half is removable for the user to access the battery and the Micro SD and SIM card slots.
Display
What makes the Kyocera Hydro Elite much better than its predecessors is that it is now designed with the standard display panel for mid-range phones, a good impact-resistant 4.3-inch LCD display with 1280 by 720-pixel resolution. The said specs allow a clear viewing over the display of the phone, both images and text, and a bright viewing for outdoor use.
More so, the brand shifts from the usual capacitive home, back, and recent app buttons to the standard mid-range on-screen buttons display.
Camera
Going further with its optimized specs, the handset flaunts an 8MP rear camera equipped with LED flash and impressive features such as autofocus, digital zoom, and extra modes and effects for better shots. The selfie camera, on the other hand, has toned-down the camera effects and can only take photos in three particular sizes.
Of course, along with the camera feature, the handset is also capable of shooting good videos with a quality mounting up to 1080 pixels for the rear camera and 720 pixels for the selfie camera, and are equipped with particular video options such as audio muting, white balance, brightness, exposure, color effects and others. However, unlike the selfie camera, the rear camera’s capability is much more advanced especially that it allows digital zoom, auto and touch focus, time lapse, contrast meter, flash, and a number of video qualities that the users can choose from.
Connectivity and Network Performance
What maybe the best thing about the new Kyocera unit is that it is capable of 4G/LTE signal reception. It even performed a good 22Mbps download and 8Mbps upload on a speed test conducted by Phone Arena.
More so, it also supports a handful of great connectivity protocols such as Bluetooth 4.0, A-GPS, dual-band capable Wi-Fi 802.11, and NFC.
Power and Battery
Giving life to the handset is a 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 Plus processor along with a 1.5GB of RAM. Now, the great thing about this is that it operates beyond the figures, allowing a number of apps to run – hence, avoiding lags upon usage.
With regards to the battery, Kyocera has equipped the Elite with a 2000mAh capacity battery to support a good 13 hours of talk time and/or almost 9 days of standby time.
Software and Memory
The Kyocera Hydro Elite operates on the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean and unlike LG, Samsung, and other smartphone brands, it is not topped with any custom UI layer made by the brand. Regardless, it is equipped with a starter and standard mode – wherein the starter mode allows first-time Android users to use the unit in an even more user-friendly interface given that it has larger icons and simpler access to menus and settings.
In order to meet the global standard of mid-range smartphones, the brand has increased the storage size to a built-in 16GB internal memory plus a Micro SD slot capable of expanding up to 32GB.
What’s New with Kyocera Hydro ELITE (C6740 & C6740N)
Truly, Kyocera has moved the bar of their waterproof smartphones’ specs to another level. One instance of which is the increase on the camera specs from 5MP to a good 8MP camera that is capable of vibrant snapshots and quality videos. Along with this is the 4G LTE capability of the handset that allows faster streaming on cellular data.
Now, with regards to improved technology, the unit flaunts a Smart Sonic Receiver technology that enables the unit to transmit audio through the hard tissue inside the ear from the ceramic transducer incorporated within the device. This is also the reason why the handset did not display an in-ear speaker up front. Just put the phone near your ear and you can easily hear from the device given that this technology actually converts the phone’s display panel to a speaker.
As expected, the Kyocera unit is also equipped with an improved waterproof protection from blowing rain and water immersion that could increase up to 1 meter within 30 minutes. However, the brand also notes that this is limited to fresh water and as much as possible, avoid dipping the phone in the pool or ocean water.
Lastly, what Kyocera Hydro Elite offers its users when it comes to connectivity is its NFC capability which allows touch-and-send sharing of contacts, videos, pictures, and others. This phone also features wireless charging through its Qi-enabled wireless charging pad.

“I want to unlock my phone!” – Tons of consumers have been curious about phone unlocking for a while now. Some may be aware but may have also been confused about unlocking with illegal practices on mobile. One may be aware though hesitating. Truly, unlocking has reached various people from around the globe. However, misconceptions continue to prevail due to lack of knowledge.
How about locked phones? Sure, many people rely on contract phones – those that offer plans and great perks. This is usually due to the reason that they are more trustworthy because they are sold by well-known carriers.
However, what could be the main difference between these two types of smartphones? How do they differ? What could be the pros and cons of purchasing them? Which smartphone type suits you best? Which side should you be on as a consumer?
The Unfolded Difference Between Locked and Unlocked Smartphones
• Locked smartphones are those mobile units that one can purchase from a carrier. In particular, they are restricted and can only work on the network provided by the carrier. Going further, what consumers do not know about purchasing contract phones is that those devices are locked by a program code which then disables the use of another carrier’s network. This explains why if you replace your carrier provided SIM card with a different one, it wouldn’t work.
• Unlocked smartphones, on the other hand, are mobile units which are directly purchased from a manufacturer. However, it can also be in the form of a locked phone that has been unlocked via a third-party service or the purchaser has acquired a manual code to unlock the unit. Either way, an unlocked smartphone enables the use of a different mobile carrier, hence, the reason why some can take and replace SIM cards much often than others.
Identifying a Smartphone Whether It’s a Locked or Unlocked Smartphone
The easiest way to identify whether a smartphone is locked or unlocked is through its branding. One can easily tell if the phone is locked if it has the company logo of a carrier which includes Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile. Most often, these companies offer contract phones which strictly runs only with its provided network. However, it’s also best to be aware that a manufacturer’s logo (i.e. LG, Samsung, HTC and many others) is different from the carrier’s. More so, they can both be indicated on the unit.
2. Dual SIM Capability
One path to identify an unlocked unit is through its SIM card slots. Most likely, a smartphone would be designed with two separate SIM card slots if it’s meant to be utilized with different carriers. Even though the chances can include that the unit is supported by multiple carriers, hence, a locked phone, a Dual SIM is still a definite factor in the identification of unlocked smartphones.
3. Model Number
If you want to be 100% sure about the unit especially during purchase, you can search the model number on the Internet. You can either check on the details included in the flyer or directly ask the salesperson about it. Now, when you get your hands on relevant results online, you will be able to determine whether the phone’s sold as locked or unlocked and even scan through advanced details on the unit for a better purchase.
4. Different SIM Card
Whether you have asked your carrier’s help or availed a third-party unlocking service on unlocking your locked phone, you can confirm this through inserting a different SIM card. If your smartphone worked with a different carrier’s SIM card, then that surely is already unlocked. However, if it didn’t, then it’s still locked.
The Pros and Cons of Locked and Unlocked Smartphones
Here’s an interesting list of the pros and cons of a locked and unlocked smartphone to help you weigh your options:
The Locked Smartphones
PROS:
✔ They are cost efficient. Most likely, carriers offer phones at a much lower price, given that they are contracted for a year or two of exclusively using the phone on the carrier’s network. It’s very much practical for those who don’t want to spend too much on a smartphone.
✔ They are equipped with extra warranty options. Compared to purchasing an unlocked phone, locked phones generally come with a carrier’s exclusive warranty program. This is beneficial especially when the phone starts malfunctioning shortly after the purchase. The consumer can easily file a warranty claim through the carrier and get a replacement phone without having to wait for the manufacturer to repair it. While the warranty options may differ from carrier to carrier, they are still worth the consideration.
✔ They are available everywhere. One may encounter various phones at the mall, however, the chances are locked or carrier phones are much common on stores.
✔ They come with great perks. What most people love about locked units is that it comes with perks that unlocked phones are lacking. This may come in accessories, freebies, or the plan itself. Hence, regardless of a two-year contract, consumers still prefer to purchase this type of smartphones.
CONS:
✘ You can’t switch carriers. What people are unsatisfied about locked phones is that you don’t get to switch on a different carrier especially when the provided service is not useful for you. More so, with the plans being offered.
✘ You’re bound to a contract. It is one of the many things that makes a locked phone worrisome. You will have to think about the two-year contract for a while just to get that great phone in your hands.
✘ You have to endure some bloatware. Think about this: you are purchasing a great deal of a phone that is only equipped with 16GB of internal storage (which you let go as it’s already a great deal for the purchase). Then, upon using the phone, you discovered that there is only a minimal amount of storage left on your phone. The suspect? The load of bloatware the carrier company has incorporated in the unit. Which, by the way, cannot be uninstalled. However, doing so may result in instability issues.
The Unlocked Smartphones
PROS:
✔ They work with various mobile carrier options. The most common reason why people switch to unlocked units or have their phones unlocked is that it is definitely capable of working with every other carrier. It is simple as popping out the SIM card from the slot and replacing it with a different one to avail a better service.
✔ You are not bound to any contract. This goes way back to the above stated, as contracts may refrain you from using your preferred carrier – despite the existing carrier being unusable. With unlocked phones, you are free to switch to any carrier at any time.
✔ There is a fewer bloatware. The thing about unlocked phones is that they are not incorporated with unnecessary apps that consumers do not usually need. They might contain apps, but most likely, they are those that are installed by the manufacturer and won’t consume the entirety of the unit’s internal storage.
✔ They are cheaper than locked phones. Unlocked phones may seem as expensive upfront, however, given that they are purchased in a take-it-and-it’s-yours-forever manner, they are cheaper than the locked units. If you will take the time to compare the price difference between the one-time payment over unlocked phones and the expense you will be spending on the contract of a locked phone, you will get to see that the initial purchase is way much cheaper than the wholeness of the expenses from a contract phone.
✔ They are travel-ready. A particular complaint about locked phones is that they are not practical for use when traveling – given such reasons as non-compatibility or costly charges from partner services from outside the country. With that said, an unlocked phone is most likely to be efficient as one can simply change SIM cards to avail the service in the area that they are in.
✔ They are practical for resale. Given that they are not bound to any contract; a consumer can easily sell them to any potential buyer all over the globe. Even more, the consumer can always swap to a new unit upon resale.
CONS:
✘ They are expensive for initial purchase. What people find as an issue with unlocked phones is that they’re particularly expensive given the initial purchase compared to locked phones which are offered at discounted prices.
Evaluate Whether You’re the Locked or Unlocked Smartphone Type of User
As a consumer, it is best to go for the type of smartphone that fits you and your needs. With that said, here are some considerations for you to evaluate if you are the locked or unlocked smartphone type of user.
Are You the Locked Smartphone Type of User?
Wants to make sure your phone comes with full protection (or warranty options)
Loves flagship phones from well-known smartphone brands
Unwilling to spend too much upfront
Not so much of a traveler
Are You the Unlocked Smartphone Type of User?
Purchases the latest phone with the latest technology – immediately
Does not have the patience on waiting for a new upgrade of the device from the mobile carrier
Willing to pay upfront
Is a regular traveler
Key Takeaway
There are various reasons why you should side on either locked or unlocked smartphone. However, what this article highlights are the benefits that you can earn from purchasing either of them. Sadly, there is no definite winner – only of what is fitting for you and your needs that makes one your perfect match.

You get to fully utilize your phone and enjoy its features.
“If I would unlock my phone, is it legal?” This particular question has been going around among smartphone users – and some couldn’t even get a decent answer, hence, enduring the restrictions over their phones. Not being able to enjoy the perks that your phone offers may be frustrating especially when you are constantly traveling overseas.
For most users, the common misconception of unlocking phones is that it is purely illegal. Thing is, every three years, the Library of Congress reviews the rules of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and makes particular exemptions allowed under the rule of law. Way back in 2006, the Library allowed unlocking to be exempted from the DMCA. However, that exemption was short lived until 2012 as the Library did not renew the exemption. The change was due to the reason being the firmware that your phone has is copyrighted and cannot be changed without violating the law.
But that is the history of unlocking being illegal, once.
On 2014, US President Barack Obama signed a law stating that “…each smartphone owner has the right to unlock their devices and use them on other networks,” reversing the previously stated law on unlocking phones. This law comes with a few hoops like AT&T allowing you to unlock your device only when your contract has expired.
Why Should I Unlock My Phone?
You may be asking yourself, why should I? For the most part, it isn’t mandatory. However, you could be missing a lot of things if you don’t. To help you with this matter, here are the key reasons why you should unlock your phone:
1. Free from International Charges
For most people, the use of unlocking your phone is not to change a network – rather, to be able to use your phone overseas without paying too much. When you purchase from a carrier, the front charge would be lower. However, as you would know, the device will be locked by that same carrier and will only work on their network. Furthermore, when you travel overseas, you will need to pay that particular carrier with the international charges so you can use your phone. Meaning, replacing your existing SIM card with another wouldn’t work. For this matter, unfortunately, buying a SIM card is much cheaper than paying those charges, and you wouldn’t have any other choice as your device is locked.
2. Change Carriers
Being in a contract makes you restricted from availing better deals from a different carrier. While it is true that carriers aren’t all great, they still update their plans to provide better service offers. In such case, you may find the plan that would work best for you in another carrier while you are tied to a contract with another, which means you wouldn’t be able to avail your preferred plan.
3. No Security Loss
Most times, people worry that unlocking your phone may cause the device to be vulnerable to security issues. However, this is yet another misconception. Unlocking does not affect your phone’s security, jailbreaking does. That’s two different matters – as jailbreaking your smartphone means downloading unauthorized apps which could affect your device’s security, while unlocking means allowing your phone to work with another service provider.
Key Takeaway
Unlocking your phone simply means a right – a right to use your phone with another service provider, especially when your device is not being fully utilized due to being locked. Given this point, these fairly good reasons, and the fact that unlocking is legal, why should you not?
